Speaking at the opening of a roundtable discussion organized by the National Migration Observatory, Palatini emphasized that the Kingdom’s approach demonstrates that it is possible to ensure effective border control while respecting the fundamental principles of human rights.

Humanitarian border management requires strengthened regional and international cooperation, as demonstrated by the Rabat Process, the UN official pointed out, noting that this Euro-African dialogue on migration and development, chaired by Morocco in 2023, provided an “exemplary framework” to promote this vision.

In this regard, the IOM representative recalled that the Kingdom proposed the development of a Regional Charter on Humanized Border Management, thereby demonstrating its commitment to advancing this approach.

This initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of partner countries to adopt a legally-based integrated border management approach “while remaining effective in the fight against human trafficking,” she said.

According to her, humanitarian border management is now “a necessity in our globalized world” and represents an opportunity to transform migration challenges into levers for human and economic development.

Amidst complex migration flows, Morocco, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, stands out for its "inclusive and innovative" migration policy, said Laura Palatini Chief of Mission at the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Morocco, on Thursday in Rabat.
