The Kingdom of Morocco plays a fundamental role in the reconfiguration of global supply chains, as it is the only energy and trade corridor linking Europe, to Africa and the Atlantic,” stressed Benali during a panel on “green energy zones and corridors,” as part of a ministerial meeting on COP29 initiatives.

Morocco is the only African country interconnected with Europe, both in terms of electricity and gas, as well as in logistics, she clarified, highlighting the advanced partnership between the Kingdom and the European Union under the “Green Partnership.”

“According to Bloomberg, the Kingdom of Morocco is one of the five key global connectors, she pointed out. “The world needs one of these plays to become a sustainable corridor.”

The government official explained in this regard that Morocco’s view as a corridor revolves around the transit and certification of green molecules and electrons, in compliance with carbon footprint reduction criteria, social standards, governance and human rights.

“The Kingdom enjoys the respect and trust of its international partners, and honors its commitments to sustainability,” Benali emphasized, noting that Morocco aims to triple its renewable energy capacity and increase investment in electrical grids fivefold by 2030.

This ministerial meeting, which was attended by several government officials, seeks mainly to launch COP29 initiatives in the energy sector, explore strategies for a successful implementation of different initiatives_ including collaboration between stakeholders and the involvement of the private sector_ and ensure support for these initiatives as energy outcomes of COP29.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (November 11-22) primarily focuses on climate financing, in light of the need to enable all countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect lives and livelihoods from the worsening effects of climate change, particularly for vulnerable communities.

Morocco is the sole energy and trade corridor connecting Europe, Africa and the Atlantic, said the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Leila Benali on Friday in Baku.
