“Several political groups, led by Popular Force, which chairs the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Peruvian Congress, have adopted a resolution supporting the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a peaceful solution to the dispute over the Sahara,” Fujimori told MAP.
She recalled that the Peruvian government had taken a “very clear” decision in the 1990s to support Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces—a position that was upheld for many years.
Fujimori, who is on a working visit to Morocco, noted that the adoption by the Peruvian Congress of the resolution in favor of the Moroccanness of the Sahara aimed to correct the inconsistency of former President Pedro Castillo regarding the Moroccan Sahara.
She also stressed that the adoption of this resolution by political parties represented in the Peruvian Congress, a “strategic and natural ally” of the Kingdom, reflects strong support from the majority of the Peruvian political class for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
Speaking about political cooperation between Peru and Morocco, Fujimori noted that the signing of a cooperation agreement during her visit to the Kingdom between the Istiqlal Party and Fuerza Popular would help consolidate democratic practices in both countries. She emphasized the importance of exchanging views on issues of common interest and sharing experiences between political parties of both nations.
Praising the development Morocco has achieved under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Fujimori highlighted the Kingdom’s assets, particularly in water management, renewable and green energy, and agriculture.
Moreover, she stressed that Morocco, thanks to its strategic geographic position and large-scale port infrastructure, is a gateway for Peru and other Latin American countries to Africa, while Peru can serve as Morocco’s gateway to the Pacific, South America, and Asia.
