During the opening session, Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka reaffirmed the country’s commitment to adding substantial value during its term as vice president.

He emphasized the strategic importance of this meeting, noting that its outcomes will contribute to the 3rd African Implementation and Partnership Conference, scheduled for May 27-29, 2025 in Lusaka, Zambia.

As part of the implementation of the Africa Water Vision for 2025, Baraka stressed the importance of building on the current vision before moving forward, advocating for a shared vision that incorporates the unique features of the five African sub-regions, while remaining closely aligned with issues related to water and sanitation.

The water minister also urged reflection on funding mechanisms, advocating for alternative financing and the unconditional transfer of technologies to address an estimated annual need of 64 billion dollars.

AMCOW Executive Secretary Rashid Mbazira, for his part, praised the “crucial” role of these consultations in shaping an African water policy that aligns with the AU Agenda 2063.

In his view, the sustainable management of water resources and WASH solutions (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) is essential to achieving our socio-economic goals,” he said, calling for collective mobilization.

Running until April 10th, this meeting aims to develop the African Water Vision for 2025, tailored to the needs of African countries and mindful of the unique characteristics of each sub-region.

Rabat is hosting the regional consultations of the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) Northern Africa which began on Tuesday.
