The simultaneous staging on the same site of these two competitions, organized by the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation (FRMG) and the Hassan II Golf Trophy Association, perpetuates a tradition of diversity established in 1993 by the late HM Hassan II, illustrious founder of the two tournaments, the FRMG said in a statement.
The Hassan II Trophy, which takes place on the legendary Red Course is, for the third year running, a must-attend event on the PGA Tour Champions, the same source said, adding that 66 legends of world golf, including Ernie Els, Colin Montgomerie, Tom Lehman and Jose Maria Olazabal, are set to deliver a top-class sporting spectacle and write a new page in the tournament’s history under the theme of the Return of Champions.
The statement added that in 2024, the competition had seen a fierce competition for first place. Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez emerged as victor, displaying mastery throughout the tournament. Thomas Bjørn (Denmark) came second with a score of -9, closely followed by Mark Hensby (Australia) in third place with a score of -7.
The Lalla Meryem Cup, which takes place in the Blue Course, will once again bring together the European elite of women’s golf and will be the first step of the Ladies European Tour (LET). Among the 108 competitors, Morocco will be represented by 5 players, including Ines Laklalech, Maha Haddioui, and reigning African Amateur champion Sofia Cherif Essakali.
In 2024, England’s Bronte Law dominated proceedings with a total of -13, followed by France’s Pauline Roussin Bouchard (-10) and Spain’s Fatima Fernandez Cano (-9). Ines Laklalech put in the best ever performance by a Moroccan player, finishing in joint 7th place with a score of -6. Young Sofia Cherif Essakali, aged just 14, also shone, making the cut for the second year running.
At the same time, on the Green Score, the “Pro-Am Hassan II Kids Cup by First Tee” will feature 18 budding young Moroccan golfers in a fun and educational competition alongside professionals from the PGA Tour Champions and the LET.
Organized every year by the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation and the Hassan II Golf Trophy Association, this event is a real showcase for Morocco on the international stage, the statement concluded.
