Anwarpress EN Tuesday 26 November 2024 - 17:35

This session, which will be marked by an international conference on “Cooperation between Africa and Latin America in the face of the challenges of security and peace,” will provide an opportunity to present parliamentary strategies and initiatives aimed at promoting peace and coexistence, the Parliament said in a press release.

This extraordinary session, themed “Facing common challenges: security, climate change and economic development”, will also see the announcement of the Moroccan Parliament’s transition from the status of “permanent observer member” within FOPREL, obtained in 2014, to that of “advanced partner”.

The meeting will focus on four main themes: security challenges in Central America and elsewhere, parliamentary action to address the social and economic impacts of climate change, and integrated development, as well as the joint regional parliamentary action plan.

Participants will also examine a draft regional framework law aimed at combating human trafficking, particularly of women and children, the press release added.

On the sidelines of the session, the presidents of the legislative powers and parliamentary delegations representing Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico will hold a series of meetings with Moroccan officials.

Created in 1994, the FOPREL aims to strengthen the implementation and harmonization of member countries’ legislation and to develop consultation mechanisms between the presidents of their legislative institutions to meet the challenges facing the region, in addition to supporting legislative studies at regional level.

FOPREL brings together the Speakers of the Parliaments of the 09 member countries, namely Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Puerto Rico, plus observer members Parlatino, Parlacen, the Chilean Parliament, and the Moroccan Parliament.

The Moroccan Parliament will host, on November 27-28, the 30th Extraordinary Session of the Forum of the Chairpersons of the Legislative Assemblies of Central America, Caribbean and Mexico (FOPREL).
