“Due to lower production costs and abundant renewable energy, manufacturers such as Stellantis and Renault are transferring production of their strategic models to their plants in Morocco,” noted the magazine in an article titled “Morocco, future leader in automotive production… for Europe.”
According to Gizmodo, these assets enable Morocco to be a “key production hub for the European automotive industry.”
Morocco offers lower salaries than in Europe and cheaper electricity rates thanks to its commitment to renewable energies, explains the Spanish media. It noted that these conditions have led Stellantis and Renault to increase their production capacity in the country in order to strengthen their global competitiveness.
Given the new investments, the media outlet explains,the Stellantis plant in Kenitra plans to double its production capacity by 2025 to 450,000 units per year, .
Morocco currently produces 700,000 cars a year. This is set to exceed one million by 2027, Gizmodo reports, adding that models such as the Peugeot 208, Citroën Ami, Opel Rocks and Fiat Topolino are already part of its production portfolio.
To this end, the Moroccan government has doubled the capacity of the “Tangier Automotive City” business park in the port of Tangier Med, a key point for exporting vehicles to Europe.
This momentum reflects Morocco’s solid automotive industry, and consolidates its position in the global market, where production costs and sustainability play an essential role, the Spanish magazine concluded.
