Morocco’s re-election to this UN treaty body reflects the international community’s confidence in the Kingdom’s efforts, under the far-sighted vision of HM King Mohammed VI, to protect and promote human rights in their indivisibility and universality.

This re-election also attests to Morocco’s efforts to face global challenges impeding people’s full enjoyment of their economic, social and cultural rights.

Omar Battas, Professor at Casablanca’s Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy and Director of the Department of Psychiatry at this Faculty of Medicine, is the author of several works in the field of torture prevention, the latest of which is entitled “Management of the state of health emergency in Morocco: Security and human rights.”

The SPT is a treaty body of the UN human rights system. Its prevention mandate focuses on a proactive approach to the prevention of torture and ill-treatment. The Subcommittee visits places of deprivation of liberty and examines the treatment of detainees held there. It also provides advice to national preventive mechanisms.

Morocco, represented by Omar Battas, was re-elected to the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) for the 2025-2028 period, during the elections held on Thursday in Geneva by the 10th Meeting of States Parties, Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates said in a press release.
