Morocco Participates in 150th IPU Assembly in Tashkent

The Moroccan delegation, led by the Speaker of the House of Councillors, Sidi Mohamed Ould Errachid, comprised Ahmed Touizi, from the Authenticity and Modernity (PAM) group, Mustapha Raddad from the National Rally of Independents (RNI), Ahmed El Aaleme from the Istiqlal of Unity and Egalitarianism group and Khaddouj Slassi from the Socialist group.

The delegation also included Kamal Ait Mik from RNI, Hassan Choumais from PAM, the Secretary-General of the House of Representatives, Najib El Khadi, the Secretary-General of the House of Councillors, El Assad Zerouali, Abdelwahed Driouch, General Councillor in charge of Parliamentary Diplomacy, Saad Ghazi, Director of External Relations and Said Satraoui, Head of the External Relations Division.

Prior to the Assembly’s kick-off, focused on the theme of “Parliamentary action for social development and justice,” the Moroccan delegation took part in meetings of the IPU’s African, Arab, and Islamic geopolitical groups, as well as the Forum of Women Parliamentarians.

The 150th Assembly is set to adopt resolutions on the emergency item and on topics discussed by the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security and the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, dubbed “Parliamentary strategies to mitigate the long-lasting impact of conflicts, including armed conflicts, on sustainable development.”

The Assembly is also set to organize workshops on climate action, parliamentary diplomacy and social norms impacting women’s health.

During the Assembly, the IPU will also open nominations for the 2025 edition of the Cremer-Passy Prize, awarded to a parliamentarian or parliamentarians with an outstanding record in gender equality, the IPU’s theme for the year.

The Assembly will culminate in the adoption of a final document on the theme of the general debate.

Other IPU bodies will meet, including its thematic Standing Committees, the Forum of Young Parliamentarians, the Committee on Middle East Questions and the IPU Task Force on the peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine.

Founded in 1889 and based in Geneva, the IPU is a world organization of 181 member parliaments and 15 associate members. It fosters parliamentary diplomacy and empowers parliaments and parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development worldwide.

The 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly kicked off on Saturday in Uzbekistan’s capital, Tashkent, with Morocco taking part.
