While this figure marks an 88.1% increase compared to last year’s 60 mm, it remains 18.3% below the general annual average of 139.3 mm, Baitas noted in response to reporters’ questions following the council of government meeting.

Since February 22, Morocco has experienced significant rainfall, exceeding the normal average for the same period in 2024 by 130% (43.5 mm vs. 18 mm). These rains have helped reduce water deficits and significantly improved reservoir levels, he added.

The total water inflow between September 1, 2024, and March 20, 2025, is estimated at 2.98 billion cubic meters. While this represents a 60.5% deficit compared to the annual average, it is still 57.5% higher than the previous year’s inflow, Baitas said.

He also highlighted that snowfall in several regions has contributed to increased water reserves, with an estimated 1.71 billion cubic meters flowing into reservoirs since February 1.

Thanks to these inflows, dam storage levels have seen a notable improvement, rising from 27% to 36% as of March 20, 2025, with a total volume of 6.12 billion cubic meters, he added.

The minister emphasized that these rains have revived hopes among farmers due to their positive impact on various agricultural sectors, particularly fruit trees. The rainfall is expected to reduce irrigation needs, lower energy costs for farmers, and ease livestock feed expenses for herders.

Average rainfall in Morocco from September 1, 2024, to March 19, 2025, reached 113.9 mm, Government Spokesman Mustapha Baitas said on Thursday.
