Recent Rainfall Breaks Morocco's Midwinter Dry Spell, Weather Authority Reports

In the past 48 hours, more than 82 mm of rain were recorded in Tangier, 66 mm in Rabat, and 42 mm in Casablanca. The Atlas Mountains and the Souss regions were also affected, Youabed told MAP on Monday.

These rains resulted from a deep atmospheric depression named “JANA,” which impacted Western Europe before reaching Morocco, he continued, explaining that this depression brought substantial rainfall, essential after several months of drought.

Weather disturbances are expected to continue throughout the week. “A succession of depressions will persist in the country, with rain expected in the Rif, Middle and High Atlas, as well as in the northern Atlantic plains,” Youabed informed.

Snowfall is also predicted in areas over 1,600 meters in altitude, he noted, adding that “by Thursday, moderate to heavy rainfall will affect several regions, including Tangier, the Rif, and the Atlantic plains.”

He emphasized the importance of these rains, although delayed, stating that they are beneficial for agriculture and the country’s water resources, and will help replenish groundwater levels and benefit spring crops.

However, the DGM urges caution due to the risks of flooding and sudden river surges. “It is important to follow weather alert bulletins and avoid any recklessness,” Youabed warned.

After a dry start to the winter season, this rainy spell represents an opportunity for agriculture and water resource management, in a climate context marked by increasingly significant fluctuations.

Heavy rainfall in Morocco over the weekend ended the first half of the winter season, which had seen a rainfall deficit, according to Houcine Youabed of the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).
