Family Code Reform Signals Kingdom's Commitment to Justice and Equality – Head of Europe Council Office in Morocco

During a conference on the Family Code in Rabat, Morte-Gomez stressed that this reform process involves state institutions, academics, researchers, civil society players and international organizations, noting that it is part of an inclusive and participatory approach.

In this regard, she reaffirmed the Council of Europe’s commitment to supporting Morocco in this process. In her view, gender equality and the protection of women’s rights are essential conditions for building fairer, more inclusive and more prosperous societies.

“In Morocco, the Council of Europe works closely with institutional and non-institutional partners to support legal and social reforms aimed at promoting women’s rights,” she reported.

For her part, UNFPA-Morocco Representative Marielle Sander reiterated UNFPA’s commitment to supporting Morocco’s efforts to guarantee effective equality between men and women, and to empower citizens to ensure their active participation in the Kingdom’s sustainable development.

She considered legal reforms essential levers for guaranteeing gender equality, as well as for the exercise of rights, urging that reforms prioritize aligning national legislation with international standards.

The conference, organized by Mohammed V University, in partnership with the Council of Europe and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA-Morocco), the conference provided an opportunity to discuss the key areas of reform of the Family Code, in particular those aimed at ensuring the rights of all family members.

Participants in the meeting highlighted the importance of the reform in upholding the principles of equality and justice, noting its significance in shaping a more inclusive and fair legal framework.
