“This is the largest conference ever held on this topic, with such a high number of participants—more than a hundred countries. An event where concrete commitments were made on ways to scale up road safety,” Krug emphasized said in a statement to the press following the adoption of the Marrakech Declaration.

He expressed the WHO’s satisfaction with its collaboration with Morocco in organizing this global event and the success of this edition, which culminated in the Marrakech Declaration.

“We will work together to facilitate the implementation of the commitments outlined in the final Declaration,” he assured, stressing that the goal is to achieve as quickly as possible the objective of halving the number of road fatalities.

In this regard, he highlighted the need to enact appropriate legislation, improve road infrastructure, and promote a transport system that enhances road safety for pedestrians, children, and young people. He also advocated for encouraging walking, cycling, and the use of public transportation.

The Marrakech Declaration, adopted at the conclusion of this international event, reaffirmed the collective commitment to making road safety a global priority.

According to this document, the solutions to be implemented must be based on strong political will, increased investment, collaborative partnerships, and the active involvement of all stakeholders.

The 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Marrakech saw a record-high participation and resulted in concrete commitments, said Etienne Krug, Director of the Department of Social Determinants of Health at the WHO.
