Titled “Protecting Young Lives,” the report highlights the issue of road accidents as one of the leading causes of death and injury among children and adolescents worldwide.
The report aims to assess the global road safety situation for children and adolescents, highlight the risk factors that make young road users particularly vulnerable to traffic-related injuries, and suggest effective strategies and targeted policies to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities among young road users.
On this occasion, Margie Peden, Director of the Global Injury Programme at the George Institute for Global Health, emphasized that the report compiles all available information and data on child injuries and deaths from road accidents worldwide, specifically examining the scale of this issue.
In a statement to MAP, Peden, also Co-Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Injury Prevention and Trauma Care revealed that nearly 181,000 children die each year on the roads—approximately 500 children per day, or one child every three minutes.
She called for special attention to be given to awareness measures aimed at protecting road users in general, and children in particular.
The document is intended for policymakers, practitioners, NGOs, and global stakeholders, providing them with the knowledge and tools needed to prioritize and improve road safety for children and adolescents.
Under the theme “Commitment to Life,” the Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety is held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO). The event brings together official delegations led by over 100 ministers responsible for transport, interior affairs, infrastructure, and health.
The global event hosts over 2,700 participants, including nearly 600 high-level experts, alongside representatives of UN agencies and international organizations involved in road safety. These include notably the World Bank, the International Transport Forum, the International Road Federation, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), and other key institutions.
