Signed in the presence of Morocco’s Ambassador to Mauritania, Hamid Chabar, this agreement is in line with the High Guidelines of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to strengthen bilateral relations and regional energy cooperation.
As part of the Royal Atlantic Initiative to enhance African integration and promote South-South cooperation, the Morocco-Mauritania electrical interconnection project represents a major step forward. It will significantly improve the reliability of both countries’ electricity networks, enhance their performance, and facilitate electricity exchanges between Morocco and Mauritania, as well as between Europe and West Africa within the framework of the West African Power Pool (WAPP).
This project also provides an opportunity to capitalize on and fully exploit the complementarities between the two countries’ electricity networks, particularly for better integration and optimization of their renewable energy resources.
On this occasion, Hamane noted that this electrical interconnection project will open up new opportunities in the field of renewable energy, especially since both countries have significant renewable energy potential.
He also added that this initiative will foster cooperation between the two electricity networks, enhance expertise, and facilitate exchanges between Morocco and Mauritania.
For his part, Mohaned Elabd highlighted that the electrical interconnection between Morocco and Mauritania marks an important step that aligns with the evolving realities of Mauritania’s electricity system.
It opens promising prospects for both countries, enabling them to strengthen their connectivity with European and African energy markets, he said.
