Morocco Foils Attempt to Smuggle 9.8 Tons of Chira, Arrests 6 Suspects

This operation took place in the “Addher” area in the rural commune of Kouzemt – Imintanoute, based on precise information provided by the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).

Six people were arrested, including an official and a former elected representative, for alleged links with a criminal network involved in international trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances, according to the same source.

The suspects, aged between 29 and 59, were arrested in the act of elaborating an international drug trafficking operation by sea, while the inspection led to seizing 9.8 tons of chira in several locations, as well as a commercial vehicle bearing a false number plate, an inflatable boat and a marine engine.

The suspects were taken into custody for further investigation overseen by the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office, in order to unravel the full extent of the case and identify any potential accomplices.

This bust is part of the joint efforts of the national security services and the DGST to effectively combat cross-border criminal networks, particularly those involved in the international trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances.

Members of Marrakech police prefecture, in coordination with their counterparts in Safi, thwarted on Tuesday, an attempt to internationally traffic 9.8 tons of cannabis resin (locally known as chira), according to a security source.
