Brazilian Daily Sheds Light on Casablanca beyond Cinema

In a richly illustrated article by journalist Camila Lima, Casablanca is presented as a destination teeming with a creative industry, featuring women at the helm of haute cuisine and home to prestigious hotels.

“Hollywood has always left its mark. Casablanca’s place in the collective imagination of the West is a case in point. However, Morocco’s largest city, which bestowed its name upon one of the greatest classics of American cinema, goes far beyond the storyline told by Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart”, the daily points out.

O Globo‘s article highlights Casablanca as the country’s financial center, with direct flights from Brazil recently established by national flag carrier Royal Air Maroc.

It is a place where street art and creative industries thrive, where young people aspire to build their future and where women enjoy freedom, the article adds, attributing this progress to the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI since His accession to the Throne in 1999.

According to Camila Lima, “one of the greatest surprises (or wonders) of a trip to Morocco is that you can spend hours contemplating the ceilings, walls or floors, so fascinating is the wealth of detail and precision of the craftsmanship. These age-old techniques are reflected in every centimeter of the buildings. On a broader scale, Casablanca’s architecture is just as captivating, dominated by geometric buildings in noble materials, embodying the essence of Art Deco”.

Another visual experience is to stroll through the Art District, spanning the Corniche, the coastal strip, to the Nevada Skate Park. This area is dotted with works featuring futuristic designs and optimistic messages, created by over 20 artists, many of them women.

“Morocco has made incredible progress in promoting the role of women in society. Today, they hold positions of great responsibility. The new generation is dynamic, curious and eager to learn,” comments Sarah Hamizi, one of the first women to run a Barbershop in Casablanca.

The article also mentions the historic Habous district, home to souks brimming with carpets, ceramics and spices, as well as fashion boutiques specializing in luxury caftans and babouches.

O Globo gives particular attention to luxury hotels that offer guests top-of-the-range services and a unique Moroccan gastronomic experience.

“In Morocco, cooking is above all the prerogative of women. They are behind the wonderful recipes that make up its culinary heritage. It’s a cuisine handed down from generation to generation, tasty and fragrant”, the daily concludes.

O Globo, one of Brazil's most influential daily newspapers, has transported its readers into the world of Casablanca, far beyond its cinematic reputation, inviting them to explore the Moroccan metropolis as the crossroads of art, luxury and tradition.
