The infections include 23 cases at Tangier 2 local prison, involving two staff members, DGAPR said in a press release, adding that additional cases were recorded at Mohammedia local prison (7 cases), Ain Bourja local prison (5 cases), Kenitra central prison (2 cases), and Bourkaiz local prison in Fez (2 cases). Single cases were reported at Tetouan and El Kelaâ des Sraghna local prisons.

In light of the outbreak, DGAPR urged families and authorized visitors to adhere to preventive measures, including avoiding visits if experiencing symptoms, to mitigate the risk of further transmission within prison facilities.

“DGAPR has implemented all necessary preventive and therapeutic measures outlined in the health protocol developed by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection,” the statement said, noting that these measures were activated immediately upon detecting symptoms in new arrivals at affected facilities.

Suspected cases have been quarantined for laboratory testing, and treatment is being provided in line with the protocol, DGAPR added. The delegation also announced the launch of a voluntary vaccination campaign for inmates and staff, administered by medical teams from the Health ministry.

To enhance surveillance and response, DGAPR issued a circular on January 3 to all penitentiary facilities. The directive mandates immediate preventive actions and close coordination with the Ministry of Health to address any new cases detected among inmates, staff, or visitors.

Moroccan authorities have reported 41 measles cases across several penitentiary facilities, the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) announced on Wednesday.
