Royal Atlantic Initiative, ‘Ambitious’ Vision for Innovative Regional Cooperation – Ambassador

During his intervention on the first day of the 13th “The Atlantic Dialogues,” hosted by the Policy Center for the New South (PCNS), the Moroccan diplomat highlighted this Royal Vision and the development it promotes in the whole region and in the Atlantic sub-region.

“Conceived by Africa and for Africa, this initiative rests on cross-border partnerships bringing concrete solutions, while turning challenges into opportunities,” the Ambassador said, stressing that this Vision drove long awaited changes, essential for the region’s development and stability.

Speaking alongside prominent figures  such as Managing Director of Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) Amina Bennkhadra, and Coordinator of the Atlantic Centre Nuno António de Noronha Bragança, Amrani explained that the Royal Initiative rests on three fundamental pillars.

“It focuses on transition from isolated projects to interconnected networks, reinforcing coherent and sustainable regional integration, and aims to shift relations from external dependence to Southern-led autonomy, building strong local capacities through broad political ownership mobilized in the region,” he explained, adding that it also promotes sustainability by replacing fragmented approaches and short-sighted policies with strategies that will positively impact several generations to come.

In response to a question on the complementarity between the Royal Atlantic Initiative and existing Atlantic frameworks, the diplomat asserted that this Initiative redefines North-South relations, bringing them closer to the rationales of equality, shared responsibility and mutual respect that must prevail in any sincere and relevant partnership.

In this sense, he continued, the Initiative does not replace, but rather enriches existing mechanisms with solutions adapted to the realities and aspirations of the South countries.

To illustrate the concrete impact of this momentum, Ambassador Amrani mentioned several flagship projects, including the Atlantic Port of Dakhla, “a 12 billion dirham structuring project that transforms maritime routes into real engines of economic development for the region”.

In addition, the Atlantic Gas Pipeline is “a 5,660-kilometer energy corridor linking 13 African countries, guaranteeing greater energy security through unprecedented regional cooperation”.

“Food security programs, which combine Moroccan expertise in phosphates with innovative agricultural initiatives, are another shining example of this willingness to strengthen food sovereignty in the countries of the South”, Amrani added.

The diplomat highlighted the Royal Initiative for the Sahel, “which integrates economic development and security to promote sustainable and inclusive stability”, noting that this initiative “places regional connectivity at the heart of its action, by transforming economic corridors into engines of concrete development”.

He concluded that this Vision is “the essence, the heart and the reason for a proven path towards tangible regional transformation, driven by pragmatic and sustainable cooperation, in the service of shared prosperity”.

The Royal Atlantic Initiative, driven by HM King Mohammed VI, embodies an unprecedented ambitious vision, as it offers not only an innovative regional cooperation model, but also a bold geopolitical approach, founded on strong and structural dynamics of connectivity, interdependence and – above all – sustainable development, Morocco’s Ambassador to the U.S., Youssef Amrani, stressed on Thursday in Rabat.
