Water Resources: Moroccan Ambassador Calls for Greater Euro-Mediterranean Cooperation

During the encounter, the Moroccan diplomat argued that a strengthened Euro-Mediterranean cooperation is “more than necessary in the management of water and energy resources, by sharing technologies and best practices for a more secure and sustainable future.”

He emphasized the importance of managing water scarcity across the Mediterranean region to meet the extreme climate challenges, such as prolonged drought and record temperatures, affecting the Mediterranean area from Türkiye to Morocco, including Italy, Malta, France and Spain.

He also took the opportunity to review the Kingdom’s achievements, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in water resource management, notably through its dam policy, with a storage capacity of over 20.7 billion cubic meters.

Balla underscored the crucial role of in producing hydroelectric power, which accounts for around 10% of the country’s electricity, citing the challenges posed by weather conditions, building costs, infrastructure maintenance, as well as innovative solutions adopted by the Kingdom to maximize their profitability. 

The encounter was organized by Italian journal Il Quotidiano del Sud, as part of the Euro-Mediterranean Economy Festival “Feuromed”.

In a gathering held on Thursday in Italy's Mendicino, Moroccan Ambassador Youssef Balla called for greater Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in water and energy resource management.
