The “Morocco’s Parliamentary Day,” co-organized by the Moroccan Embassy in Lima, is part of the “outstanding bonds of friendship and cooperation between the governments of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Peru, as well as their respective legislative institutions.”
In a statement, the Embassy said that this commemoration was institutionalized within the Peruvian Congress, at the initiative of the Peru-Morocco Parliamentary Friendship Group, chaired by MP Ernesto Bustamante Donayre, on the occasion of the group’s second meeting, held on April 25, 2023 at the Peruvian legislative institution’s headquarters.
On this occasion, Morocco’s ambassador to Peru, Amin Chaoudri, highlighted the particular interest of this second edition, which coincides with two anniversaries: the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of His Majesty the King’s historic visit to Peru in 2004 and the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 1964.
The Moroccan diplomat said that the Royal Visit to Peru had marked a “decisive turning point in the strengthening of bilateral friendship and cooperation, paving the way for increased political dialogue and more intense economic and cultural exchanges” between the two countries.
He stressed that it is “essential to remember that our ties have been forged by perseverance and trust, essential elements that have helped translate our dialogues into concrete actions to the benefit of both peoples,” adding that “these initiatives provide the opportunity to develop cooperation in various fields, always on the basis of respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our countries and the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of each nation.”
The Moroccan ambassador also mentioned the significant democratic transformations achieved by Morocco since the enthronement of His Majesty the King in 1999, reaffirming his commitment to an inclusive democracy and highlighting the progress made in preserving the rule of law and protecting human rights, particularly those relating to gender equality.
He added that the 2011 Moroccan Constitution was particularly recognized, as it was presented as a genuine “roadmap” aimed at guaranteeing the promotion of human rights, good governance and a decentralized territorial organization with advanced regionalization, as well as the preservation of the rule of law, by establishing a sound political system based on the separation of powers and citizen participation.
For her part, the First Vice-President of the Peruvian Congress, Patricia Juárez Gallegos, highlighted the initiative of the Peru-Morocco Parliamentary Friendship Group to institutionalize November 30 of each year as Morocco’s Day in the Congress, “in commemoration of the visit made by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to the Congress of the Republic, thus becoming the first Arab and African Head of State to address our legislative institution.”
She stressed that this recognition was not only an expression of mutual respect, but also a declaration of intent to continue working to promote parliamentary dialogue, exchange of experience and cooperation on issues of common interest.
